Swift welcomed attendees to Sibos 2024 with an opening plenary covering the importance of embracing new technologies, regulations and partnerships, all of which was hosted for the first time in Beijing, China.
“The power of a network can be used to tokenise public and private blockchains and to interlink systems globally,” said Javier Pérez-Tasso, CEO of Swift. “Seeing everyone here in Beijing is a testament to the strong financial system that we’ve built over the years and has been an essential foundation for economic growth for decades.”
The session also featured insights from Samantha Emery, deputy chair of the board at Swift, Yin Yong, the mayor of Beijing and others.
Emery said: “Sibos is a bit like the Olympics of finance with delegates from all over the world coming together in that same spirit of global collaboration to explore how finance can be used as a fortification of good and with a shared pursuit for excellence.”
Meanwhile, Yong highlighted the importance of networking in the financial services industry. “Beijing’s high quality development would not be possible without the support and participation of friends, both at home and abroad,” he said.
The first day of Sibos also saw the opening of the Innotribe stage and several sessions which covered emerging markets, the transformational change that banks need to make to fully enable commerce such as enabling faster payments and the importance of identifying pilot use cases for generative artificial intelligence.
