SmartCitiesWorld, in association with Microsoft, has released a new report identifying how artificial intelligence is being used to transform urban environments ahead of Smart City Expo World Congress.

The Artificial Intelligence in Cities Trend Report 2024 highlights several use cases for AI in cities, including delivery of personalised citizen experiences and improving productivity for local government workforces.

Stavanger Kommune in Norway is one municipality that has already started integrating AI into its operations with the aim of elevating the services is offers residents whilst protecting personal data.

“Stavanger is one of the first municipalities in Norway to build their own Microsoft Azure data platform,” said Greg Wilson, worldwide public sector chief technology officer for government at Microsoft, in the report. “They used our low-code and no-code tools, like Power Platform, to enable self-service and then expanded.”

Government departments in Stavanger are now able to access real time information. For example, healthcare staff are using a unified dashboard to visualise the number of people needing to see a healthcare professional, allowing for faster decision-making and more streamlined processes.
