Cyber resilience is a team sport

Cyber resilience is a team sport

With the right team you can continue to serve your customers in the event of a security compromise, says Kyndryl’s Tim Wheatley

What would be the impact of a cybersecurity attack on your business, and do you know where to get help? Do you have response and recovery plans in place? Have you tested them?

If you haven’t, don’t wait until ‘the big one’. It is very important to update your cybersecurity strategy by using previous experience and developing an understanding into how new developments in the changing world of technology may impact your plans.

Cyber resilience helps enterprises anticipate, withstand and recover from security compromises whilst keeping the business running and customers happy, but it takes a team to achieve this.

Team players include your internal employees, whether they are from IT, legal, frontline departments or elsewhere. You may also have external service partners such as public relations firms, as well as providers responsible for managing your IT environments or law enforcement stakeholders. Finally, the independent software vendors and technology partners like Microsoft that provide the products that support your business should be on the team.

It is particularly important to align this team in preparation for an event. Anchoring plans based on National Institute of Standards and Technology guidelines will help you be prepared to act fast and coordinate the extended team when there is a breach or other cyber event that could impact your company.

Lastly, communication with internal and external stakeholders is critical. Establishing who gets what information, how they get it and when they get it, helps to ensure the team protects intellectual property, privacy and adheres to regulatory concerns. Communication also includes how you will maintain the reputation of the organisation.

The better you understand who is on your team, the better prepared your organisation will be. You’ll collectively be able to respond and recover faster and more effectively… and keep your customers not only delighted with you, but loyal.

Kyndryl’s integrated approach helps customers embed cyber resilience into the broader IT and operational strategy, underpinned by cloud and zero trust principles.
