Children increasingly see the world through touchscreens, smartphones and social media. Yet popular estimates suggest the jobs which 65% of children entering primary school today will have don’t even exist yet – a statistic that’s exciting and creates new challenges.
The task of helping to prepare students for a rapidly evolving world is considerable, but educators can find both inspiration and practical solutions at Bett, the biggest annual event in the world dedicated to education technology.
It features more than 800 suppliers including tech giants such as Microsoft, Google and Lenovo through to new brands or launches such as Brainbox Games Limited which will be launching its flagship app Magic Spell; 2Simple, which is helping teacher workload pressures with its award-winning observation capture app; start-up Blutick which is changing the way students learn Maths online; and Edutapp which will show how it is revolutionising staff training.
Complimenting the tech are the industry experts and practitioners with inspiring stories and practical advice which helps cut through the mass of information and options out there on the use of technology in education. A four-day programme includes speakers such as: Sarah Herrlinger, director of Global Accessibility Policy and Initiatives at Apple; Sir Anthony Seldon, vice-chancellor at the University of Buckingham; Mitchel Resnick, LEGO professor of Learning Research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Media Lab and online influencer Mr P.
Add to the mix school leaders and teachers who speak from real-life experiences of implementing and harnessing education technology, providing valuable insights to both fellow practitioners and development companies alike. The community of educators and innovators that attend Bett each year are bringing the future of learning to life, with all its excitement and vibrancy. These conversations will help educators not just imagine the upcoming careers of their students, but really get to grips with how to prepare them for a very different world.
