Kyndryl and Microsoft have discovered that although 84 per cent of organisations consider sustainability goals to be of high strategic importance, only 21 per cent actively leverage technology to minimise their environmental impact and guide their broader sustainability strategy.
According to the Global Sustainability Barometer survey – commissioned by Microsoft, conducted by Ecosystm and released by Kyndryl – organisations can turn their sustainability goals into reality by embedding technology into their strategies to monitor data.
“Companies can gain the insights needed to deliver on their commitments and drive resilience by integrating sustainability data with operational and financial data, and using traditional data analytics and robust AI tooling to reshape operational efficiencies and foster sustainable innovations,” said Matthew Sekol, a sustainability specialist at Microsoft.
The report found that only 19 per cent of businesses are fully utilising their data for strategic planning and decision-making. And only 15 per cent use data to guide their business transformation journeys.
Furthermore, Kyndryl and Microsoft shared that 62 per cent of organisations use artificial intelligence to monitor energy use and emissions, but 37 per cent use predictive AI to forecast energy needs based on current trends and patterns.
“As organisations increasingly recognise sustainability as a strategic imperative, we’re witnessing a surge of innovation and collaboration,” said Ullrich Loeffler, CEO and co-founder of Ecosystm. “AI is at the forefront of this movement, empowering businesses to optimise resource consumption, reduce waste and drive positive environmental impact. By uniting our efforts and leveraging technology, we can create a more sustainable and equitable future for generations to come.”
