The National Basketball Association (NBA) has launched a series of new artificial intelligence features on its NBA App, powered by Microsoft Azure.

One of the new tools, NBA Insights, uses AI to identify key narratives, player performances and notable milestones to provide fans with a continuous feed of text-based updates to better contextualise what is happening on the court.

The app is also using generative AI to localise content and offer game recaps in French, Portuguese and Spanish, as well as translations for select live games.

Throughout the basketball season, content on the NBA App will also incorporate Dunk Score, an AI-calculated grade for in-game dunks in real time based on the player’s jumping distance, style and force.

“We’re redefining the fan experience together for an unforgettable season,” said Silvia Candiani, vice president of telecommunications and media at Microsoft, in an update on LinkedIn.
