Energy provider Uniper is using Microsoft Azure to maintain operations and reduce the chance of outages. It is now running its SAP systems in the cloud ensure digital security and system availability.
Uniper inherited a legacy IT infrastructure from its parent company in 2016 so it turned to Microsoft and its partner DXC Technology to migrate its SAP systems and modernise its operations, ready for a more digital-centric energy landscape.
“We wanted to drive Uniper’s digital transformation, in turn enabling the company to be agile in its response to changes and to optimise business processes,” said Stephan Parthier, senior vice president of corporate IT at Uniper. “With this in mind, we were looking for a single platform for all our systems – and we found it in the form of Azure.
“DXC assisted us with migration and application management and provided infrastructure support for the SAP systems. Microsoft’s Customer Success Unit and the cloud solution architects also accompanied us throughout the digital transformation; Microsoft played a key role in helping us comply with all the requirements of the GDPR.”
Uniper subsequently moved another three of its enterprise resource planning systems to the cloud. By 2021 the company aims to have all other systems hosted on Azure as a platform-as-a-service, to create a fully integrated control model so it can respond quickly to fluctuations in the energy grid.
