56 VIEWPOINT SACHIO IWAMOTO: KYNDRYL Establishing trust in a digital world With concerns over the deceptive use of AI rising, how can organisations protect their employees’ identities and assets? More than four billion people participated in major elections worldwide in 2024. At the same time, the concern about deepfake attacks spreading deceptive political information and compromising security grew. Today, more than 350 vendors provide solutions for rapid content automation and code generation online. Whilst the accessibility and affordability of many of these tools has made it easier for organisations to enable new use cases and improve efficiencies, it has also made it simpler for users with malicious intent to develop tools and models designed to infiltrate privacy and security. There are two main risks that arise from the deceptive use of AI: fake content that influences our thoughts and fake identities that compromise people’s privacy and rights. Authentication mechanisms have evolved significantly over the past few decades with the development of technologies such as single sign-on, social login and passkeys, which provide a more secure and user-friendly login experience. However, these mechanisms are designed to interact solely with IT systems, and they do not solve the gap between trust in the physical and digital world. Who is the author of the news article? Are the photos and videos real? Is the source of the sensor data from internet of things devices trustworthy? It can be impossible to tell whether the content or person we are interacting with is a real human. To solve this issue, we need digital identities that work like a real-world identity for humans and things with no intermediaries. A decentralised identity service such as Microsoft Entra Verified ID is an excellent starting point of your journey. It’s an easy-to-use platform providing a trustworthy, user-centric and scalable digital identity verification solution and it also integrates with ID verification partners for remote onboarding. The key to success in digital ID innovation lies in achieving stronger and more sustainable security. Kyndryl can further support organisations using Microsoft’s security technology with its Zero Trust Services, which helps customers integrate across various components and collaboratively build modern solutions tailored to customers’ needs.
